Retraining
Information on getting retrained should be read with enthusiasm. More and more people are going to have to opt for re-training, either to boost their existing career, or start a new one.
The employment market has changed considerably over the last few decades, with few jobs now for life. Getting retraining and career changes are now an inevitable part of the job scene.
Just think how technology has changed the office environment over the years and if you can’t keep up with the pace of change in the modern business world, you are simply going to fall behind.
But whether you see getting retrained as a way of coping with your existing career, or making an advancement more likely, or as a platform for a new career altogether, you have to take a good hard look at your personal career and workplace goals.
Retraining offered by an employer should rarely be refused, but for those contemplating funding their own retraining, then common sense has to prevail. Firstly, is the planned retraining a way to increase your earning potential? Getting retrained will cost this much, but I intend to earn this much more in the first year. Or are economics less of a concern? Is the retraining, at a given cost, a route to a more fulfilling career?
And ask yourself, how do you view getting retrained? Do you see it as a number of refresher courses, taken over your whole career maybe, which allows you to stay ahead of the game. Or do you see it as a significant milestone in your career, when maybe you are prepared to invest money in yourself by taking time out for a major re-think and re-education?
Or maybe it’s a way of doing what you always wanted to do. Say a City banker who’s always wanted to be a plumber, or a baker, happy to swap the intensity of big money trading for a career path that they find ultimately more rewarding.
And how much help will you need if you know that your current position is unsatisfying, and you can’t afford to take a gamble on your salary, so you need pointing in the right direction when it comes to refocusing your employment ambitions?
The prospects of getting retrained will face many people, but the key is to see it as a huge opportunity, and not as a threat.
